During the MWC 2019 exhibition in Barcelona, Huawei made a splash by announcing the Mate X smartphone. This flagship device stands out not with its maximum performance, but with a folding design and a flexible screen. In this review, we prove that beauty, power and innovation can be successfully combined in one device.

Equipment

A premium smartphone also relies on the appropriate equipment. The device comes in a stylish box, and inside it is the hero of the review, as well as a clip for a tray with a SIM card, power adapter, adapter, USB Type-C cable, instructions.

Design

It is the appearance of the Mate X that is most striking. The smartphone case has an extremely unusual folding design. If necessary, the user can "deploy" the gadget, as a result of which the mobile phone instantly turns into a compact tablet.

Moreover, it is displayed upside down (hello, Galaxy Fold). When folded, one screen is divided into two parts - the front and the back.

Thin frames are on all sides. The back is a vertical panel made of metal. Here are the following elements: a triple camera, company logos, a double flash and a button to open the smartphone. At the bottom of this panel is the USB Type-C port. The multimedia speaker grill is present directly at the end. The dimensions of the folded device: thickness - 11 mm, weight - 295 g, height - 161.3 mm, width - 78.3 mm. Unfolded: thickness - 5.4 mm, weight - 295 g, height - 161.3 mm, width - 146.2 mm.

Display

The gadget is equipped with a huge AMOLED-screen, which has an 8-inch diagonal. Its resolution pleasantly surprises: 2480 by 2200 points. When folded, the 6.6-inch display has a resolution of 2480 by 1148 pixels. The “second” screen is at the back. It also serves as a viewfinder. In any position, the display is completely delighted: bright colors, excellent viewing angles, high pixel density and an incredible level of maximum brightness. The display bends without any problems, and the traces of the bend are almost invisible.

Performance

Mate X got the Kirin 980 processor with a maximum clock frequency of 2600 MHz and eight cores. There is a 3D accelerator Mali-G76 MP10. With RAM and ROM, everything is very good - 8 GB of RAM + 512 GB of internal storage. There is even support for progressive Nano Memory cards, the volume of which should not exceed 256 GB. A powerful battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh is installed here, it supports fast charging (55 W). Thanks to the SuperCharge function, the battery charges in half an hour to 85%. This unit is running Android 9.0, along with the exclusive shell EMUI 9.1. In AntuTu, the tech flagship is gaining more than 308,000 points. This enables the smartphone to become one of the leaders in terms of performance.

Camera

The manufacturer has placed here a triple camera with phase detection autofocus and Leica optics. The main sensor is 40 megapixel. The second and third modules are 16 and 8-megapixel, respectively. There is a two-color LED flash, as well as an additional TOF camera for measuring depth. Photos are juicy and detailed.

Sound

The gadget houses a very powerful external speaker. If you listen to music on headphones, the sound will definitely not disappoint. The spoken speaker copes with his duties perfectly.
