We all know that HTC is not having a good time: the company still cannot achieve its former successes, getting lost behind many brands. It would seem that the U12 life smartphone could improve the situation, but this review will prove that the Taiwanese manufacturer failed to do this. At the same time, with a device that has received decent characteristics, not everything is so bad. Now, first things first.

Equipment

The delivery set cannot be called rich. This includes the phone itself, the power cord, adapter, and documentation. Still, this is not a flagship model. Hence, such a modest delivery set.

Design

The main feature of HTC U12 life in terms of appearance is a double finish with spectacular textured stripes on the back. The case is made of special acrylic glass resembling plastic, and this advanced glass panel has a metallic effect.

The smartphone looks very nice, especially from the back. This coating also provides a pleasant tactile sensation. The second half of the lid is already more familiar - translucent. It houses not only a fingerprint scanner, but also a vertical unit with a flash and a dual camera. At the front there is a "frameless" screen with indents from the bottom and top. Navigation buttons “moved” to the screen. Side frames are quite common for modern mobile phones. At the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector, as well as a microphone and a multimedia speaker in the form of a thin strip. The upper edge has a headphone jack. In the hand, the device is not bad, but not perfect. Moreover, the back surface (especially its upper part) is quickly covered with traces and prints. The device looks quite unusual and attractive if it comes to the back of the case. Available colors: dark blue, dark purple. Dimensions: weight - 175 g, height - 158.5 mm, thickness - 8.3 mm, width - 75.4 mm.

Display

The device has an IPS screen with a 6-inch diagonal. The display resolution is 2160 by 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 18: 9. The screen is pretty clear. Pleasing to the eye and increased contrast, which makes the colors juicy. The matrix is protected from above by 2.5D glass from Corning. It should be noted wide viewing angles. In general, the screen leaves a good impression.

Performance

The HTC U12 life has an eight-core Snapdragon 636 processor. This chip includes Kryo 260 cores that run at 1800 MHz. There is a 3D accelerator Adreno 509. On sale, you can find two versions of the smartphone: with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM, or with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of file storage. If you use the second slot for SIM cards, then you can expand the free space up to 512 GB using microSD cards. A built-in rechargeable battery with a capacity of 3600 mAh is built in here, the charge lasts up to two days with active use. The device comes with the Android 8.1 operating system. In the AnTuTu test, U12 life scores more than 110,000 points. The smartphone performs many scenarios and tasks without slowdowns. The interface is clear and stable. If we consider games, then there can only be problems with the most demanding projects. At the same time, even in PUBG there is the ability to play comfortably on medium graphics settings.

Camera

The main camera in the HTC U12 life is dual. The main 16-megapixel module with aperture of 2.0 received tracking autofocus. The second is a 5 megapixel depth sensor.

There is a double LED flash, the camera can shoot in automatic HDR mode. Video can be recorded in 4K format without any problems. Photos are obtained in very good quality even under artificial lighting. Naturally, it is possible to take pictures with blur. There is also a 13-megapixel front camera with f / 2.0 aperture, which has a separate LED flash.

Sound

This smartphone can not boast of high-quality sound. Yes, the volume of the external speaker is quite high, but it lacks depth. The sound in the headphones is quite decent, only here there is no necessary elaboration. But there is a connector for wired headphones.

Video reviews

Price

The biggest disappointment is the price. Unfortunately, the Taiwanese brand decided that this unit should cost from 300 euros and more (depending on version and region). Only in this segment the gadget has a lot of worthy competitors. Moreover, many of them have more attractive characteristics, as well as unique features. There are still few raisins.

Conclusion

U12 life is a good smartphone with a very high price. You can highlight a very high-quality display, an interesting design of the back cover and a powerful battery. What the device is definitely missing is the exclusive features. The manufacturer positions the dual camera as an innovation, but this has not surprised anyone for a long time. The two-layer finish of the case is really impressive, although not all users can appreciate it. The problem lies in the case material, which resembles ordinary plastic. It turns out that HTC could not surprise potential buyers. Moreover, many will remain disappointed with certain characteristics. This apparatus is a reflection of affairs in a long-suffering company, here one merit is crossed out immediately by two or three shortcomings. Therefore, HTC fans will have to wait for the next smartphones. In the meantime, it remains only to wish the manufacturer good luck, and also recommend reviewing their pricing policy.
