Smartphone manufacturers regularly update their flagship devices. OnePlus is no exception: OnePlus 3T was introduced in November 2016, and six months later, in June 2019, OnePlus 5 was shown. Both devices deserve attention, but which one is preferable? Is it worth it to overpay for the newest device? This comparison will be answered by today's comparison: OnePlus 5 VS OnePlus 3T.

Build quality and design
The design of OnePlus 3T is identical to what the manufacturer showed in the spring of 2016: a one-piece metal body, tempered Gorilla Glass 4 glass and a filling hidden between them. Color options 3: Soft Gold, Midnight Black and Gunmetal. The fifth OnePlus received the colors of Midnight Black and Slate Gray, and the front panel is only black. For 3t, a white version is available, combined with a golden case.
The back panel bears a lot of differences between devices. At 3T, the camera is located in the center of the upper part of the rear panel, antenna splitter bars are noticeable. The camera itself has a fringing in the color of the case, and it is made of brushed aluminum. The gadget with an index of "five" received a double module, which is why the Chinese placed the latter in the upper left corner of the rear panel, changing the pattern of the antenna dividers. Because of this, it has become similar to the Apple iPhone 7 Plus.
There are few changes in front: the upper and lower frames of the OnePlus 5 have changed in size relative to their predecessor. Their edges are now rounded, and because of this, the impression of a thinner smartphone than it really is is created. The location of the sensors with touch buttons is the same, as are the elements on the ends.
Display
By characteristics, the screens of smartphones are identical. Both devices received a 5.5-inch Full HD Optic AMOLED matrix. The pixel density is 401 ppi. Manufacturing technology is a marketing ploy, as the modules for OnePlus are supplied by Samsung, a company known for producing Super AMOLED panels.
Be that as it may, both screens provide a natural black color, oversaturated colors and a green color when deviated. Excessive saturation allows you to fix the SRGB parameter, which is available among the parameters for developers.
The OnePlus 5 version of the flipped screen is not unfounded: the jellyiness of the image is noticeable when scrolling. The manufacturer commented on this as a software oversight, promising to correct the misunderstanding in the next update. On OnePlus 3 and 3T, such a problem could be seen only when turning the smartphone upside down.
User interface
Out of the box, 3T came with Oxygen OS 4.1.5, based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The shell is global, no one has had problems switching it to Russian yet. In addition, it can be easily updated to version 4.5.10. This version uses Android 7.1.1 Nougat as the basis, which is installed by default on OnePlus 5.
The shell itself is a modified "bare" android. A system close to ideal received a number of useful functions, such as switching touch keys to on-screen ones, and controlling the slider for switching sound modes. The launcher has got an additional screen to the left of the main one. It is somewhat reminiscent of that of Apple, it displays its own widgets with the latest contacts, applications, etc.
Specifications and Performance
The fresh processor, of course, is installed in the new OnePlus 5. This is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with the Adreno 540 graphics accelerator. Its arsenal includes 8 cores that operate on a 4 + 4 scheme. Productive cores perform logical operations at a frequency of 2.45 GHz, and energy-efficient ones - at 1.9 GHz.
The third OnePlus is equipped with last year's Snapdragon 821. The graphics chip is slightly older - Adreno 530. The working scheme of this stone is 2 + 2, with powerful cores operating at 2.35 GHz, and economical ones at 1.6. The result is predictable: OnePlus 5 bypasses 3T in all synthetic tests. The difference in Antutu results was 35,000 points, which is an abyss by modern standards.
The situation is similar with memory. 3T was available in two versions: 128 or 64 gigabytes of read-only memory. Operational has always been 6 gigabytes.The five are also available in two versions: 6/64 and 8/128. Yes, as much as 8 gigabytes of RAM. Among users, there is still no one who could load this beast one hundred percent.
The new, more powerful OnePlus 5 goes on the edge only on paper: with direct comparison, the difference is minimal. Everyday tasks on both devices do not cause problems, games run with the maximum graphics settings, the frame rate does not fall below 60 frames. It turns out that the new gadget is a "muscle game."
Camera
Device modules differ fundamentally. The 3T is equipped with the usual 16-megapixel module, aperture F / 2.0 with optical stabilization. He takes decent shots in daylight, and in the evening the result is much worse. Manual settings partially save the situation.
The camera in OnePlus 5 is a dual module consisting of wide-angle and long-focus lenses. The main module received a resolution of 16 megapixels, optics, with a focal length of 26 mm and aperture F / 1.7. Optional - 20-megapixel sensor, aperture F / 2.6 and focal length 36 mm.
There is no double magnification, at least optical. Using lenses, it is possible to achieve only a 1.6-fold approximation, the rest is the work of the software part. The result can be called high-quality daytime and twilight photographs, decent portraits with a blurred background. The latter are good, but they are not up to the level of the iPhone 7 Plus.
Both cameras record video in 4k, 1080p 60 fps and 720p 240 fps. The five makes it worse due to the lack of optical stabilization, and 3T, in turn, does not provide sufficient detail in low light. However, OnePlus 5 would be the best choice for a mobile photographer.
Battery
Last year's version received a 3400 mAh battery. A new battery installed reduced by 100 milliamps: 3300 mAh. The first one worked without problems full time from a single charge, reaching out until late at night. The usage mode included intensive listening to music, active use of social networks and about an hour of playing Hearthstone. The five in this mode worked only an hour less.
findings
When considering both smartphones for purchase, you can be sure that you will get a high-quality device that will last more than a year. But which OnePlus’s is better?
- Body. The build quality of both cases is equally perfect: squeaks, backlashes, a sagging screen - all this is the lot of budget Xiaomi. None of the comparison heroes has any advantages here.
- Screen. The matrices are the same here, they are well balanced, have a natural black color, but the jellyiness of the image in OnePlus 5 does not allow giving him the lead in this paragraph. To notice the problem in 3T, you need to try, so the leadership should be given to him.
- The shell is exactly the same. There is no talk about updating Oxygen OS to the eighth version of Android yet, because both devices do without a “plus in karma”.
- Technical specifications and performance are good, but the fifth one takes last year's competitor in synthetic tests, and the RAM here is 2 gigabytes more. The score goes to 1 + 5.
- Comparing the cameras, the conclusion was obvious: OnePlus 3T is suitable for the amateur photo, sometimes recording video. Double five module - for a mobile photographer. The best aperture, background blur, optical zoom, albeit a small one, speak in favor of OnePlus
- The battery of smartphones differs by only 100 milliamps, while the new Qualcomm processor is made at a lower manufacturing process, which is why the devices work the same way.
The comparison of OnePlus 3T and 5 can be called the victory of the first. It is difficult to argue with this, especially if its price tag is almost 100 euros more than the analogue from 2016. The verdict will be this: if you have not changed your smartphone for 2-3 years and are looking for something cool, stop the choice on the top five. If you own OnePlus 3 or 3T, then do not rush to change the device. Your gadget will serve another year and a half.
